Bill Britt and his wife, Peggy joined Amway in 1970, ten years after the company began, and built one of the largest Amway businesses in the world.
They reached Diamond level in 1973 and Crown Ambassador in 1996. In 2004 they were recognized as Founders Crown Ambassador, one of only 14 Amway distributorships in the world to have reached that level.
Bill Britt was the oldest of eight children. His father had an alcohol problem resulting in lost jobs, lost homes, and chronic chaos for the entire family. Bill worked for tips when he was too young to be on anyone's payroll.
After serving in the Korean War, Bill earned an advanced degree in engineering, and spent the next 15 years as a city manager in various North Carolina cities.
He invested $10,000 in a "blue sky" investment scam, where he was supposed to be able to sell cars obtained at lower prices than other dealers. The entire $10,000 was lost immediately.
He and Peggy had borrowed the money for this investment, and after three years of working hard to pay it back were still in debt. They were looking for some other business which would help them, and another person who had been the victim of the same investment scam called him to offer him the Amway opportunity.
He was very careful about the Amway business. As he said in various tapes and rallies, "The night I went to see this business plan for the first time, I left my wallet in my car so I wouldn't even be tempted." He has represented over and over that he was extremely skeptical.
Whiners and Winners.
You may have heard of Bill Britt, one of the most successful distributors in Amway. Some years ago, 20/20 did a feature story on Amway.
They spent 19 minutes interviewing whiners and complainers, distributors who had failed. They showed the garages full of products they couldn't sell because THEYsaid the system was broke andblamed everything on everyone but themselves.
During the last minute of the show, Mr. Britt was interviewed in front of his fabulous mansion/fine cars etc. He was asked, "Mr. Britt, this business has obviously worked for you and has been very good for you and your family. So what's your secret?"
He replied, "There is no secret. I simply showed the plan to 1200 people. 900 said, 'No.' and only 300 signed up. Out of those 300, only 85 did anything at all. Out of those 85 only 35 were serious, and out of those 35, 11 made me a millionaire."
There is an Old Saying:
ALL business is a numbers game, plain and simple.
Remember that, help your people, be persistent & you WILL succeed.
COMMENT: Remember your local newscaster is a salaried employee, often a union member, for whom the concept of individual achievement - as opposed to their individual aggrandizement - is as alien to them as honesty is to a politician.
People are often surprised when the successful individual make the cut.
We should not be.
What happens most often, is there were attempts that did NOT work before the smashing success appeared. True in Bill Britt's case - the $10,000 "blue sky" investment.
The average millionaire has gone bankrupt THREE times before he or she finally made it to the top.
